{"id":18025,"date":"2021-06-29T16:59:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T16:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/169-aspect-ratio\/"},"modified":"2023-05-20T11:32:54","modified_gmt":"2023-05-20T11:32:54","slug":"169-aspect-ratio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/en\/169-aspect-ratio\/","title":{"rendered":"16:9 aspect ratio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is 16:9 aspect ratio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 16:9 format is an <strong>aspect ratio<\/strong>, i.e. it is a <strong>specific image size ratio.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, the aspect ratio corresponding to the 16:9 format is <strong>almost a rectangle<\/strong> in which the horizontal axis dominates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This format has dominated the <strong>last decades as the standard format<\/strong> for video, television and mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tablets<\/strong> are a case apart, they took <strong>much longer<\/strong> to adopt the 16:9 aspect ratio as the <a href=\"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/en\/43-aspect-ratio\/\">4:3 aspect ratio<\/a> was much more suitable for their use. Gradually tablets have been <strong>adopting 16:9<\/strong> due to their use for viewing movies and online series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/pexels-pixabay-40739-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14240\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the 16:9 aspect ratio came about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 16:9 aspect ratio arose as a result of the <strong>constant innovations in the format<\/strong> when filming and projecting film productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What started with 4:3 became a <strong>war between film production companies<\/strong> to create the most impressive and highest quality projection format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This &#8220;war&#8221; gave rise in the first instance to <strong>widescreen formats<\/strong> such as 2.39 or Ultra Panavision. These are gradually being adapted to 16:9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16:9 aspect ratio in photography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In photography it is not one of the most commonly used aspect ratios, but it is <strong>common<\/strong> to see photographs in this format. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its <strong>predominance on the horizontal axis<\/strong> makes images captured with this aspect ratio very dynamic. It is the horizontality to which the <strong>dynamism<\/strong> of the image is attributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capture of photographic images with the intention of creating <strong>video<\/strong> is usually recorded in 16:9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Aspect Ratios | Tomorrow&#039;s Filmmakers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BdPsyLtlamM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Photoshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To work in photoshop in 16:9 format we have to take into account that it is an aspect ratio. What we have to do is to define the <strong>pixels<\/strong> of the project in such a way that they <strong>match<\/strong> the 16:9 ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16 9 resolutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution of the pixels will vary as it is a ratio, this variation depends on the <strong>resolution of the image<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2160 pixels: 3840 x 2160<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1440 pixels: 2560 x 1440<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1080 pixels: 1920 x 1080<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>720 pixels: 1280 x 720<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>480 pixels: 854 x 480<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>360 pixels: 640 x 360<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>240 pixels: 426 x 240<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"733\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Formatos_TV.jpeg\" alt=\"16:9 aspect ratio\" class=\"wp-image-14238\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dynamic format changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we understand the concepts of <strong>aspect ratio<\/strong> and <strong>composition<\/strong>, we can give narrative to the formats themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most interesting techniques in relation to formats is the <strong>dynamic change of format<\/strong> within the project itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in the film &#8220;<strong>Mommy<\/strong>&#8220;, <strong>Xavier Dolan<\/strong> uses the 4:3 aspect ratio to show the confinement and pressure to which the protagonist is subjected during almost the entire film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a certain point, Dolan <strong>dynamically changes the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9<\/strong> as the character makes a gesture of liberation by <strong>spreading his arms<\/strong> apart and giving the impression that <strong>he himself is removing the black bars<\/strong> on the sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a new space on the sides and <strong>giving amplitude and air<\/strong> to the viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/intiaudiovisual.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ecnv_mommy_.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14239\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an example of how aspect ratios support and provide narrative to the story, and how <strong>we can play with them<\/strong> and with each other to generate different emotions and sensations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 16:9 format refers to the aspect ratio, i.e. the proportion of the image.
