How aspect ratio is calculated

Aspect ratio compares the width of the frame to its height, reduced to its simplest form:

Ratio = WidthHeight → simplified by the GCD

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor and you get the ratio in lowest terms. To go the other way, lock a ratio and fixing one side solves the other while keeping the exact proportion — essential for rescaling without distorting or over-cropping. The live preview shows the shape of the frame instantly.

Example: the aspect ratio of 1920×1080

You have a 1920 × 1080 px image:

  • GCD of 1920 and 1080 = 120.
  • 1920 ÷ 120 : 1080 ÷ 120 = 16 : 9 (decimal 1.778).
  • It is landscape and totals 2.07 megapixels.

In reverse: lock 16:9 and type a width of 2560 px → the calculator sets the height to 1440 px (QHD) automatically.

Aspect ratio FAQ

What is aspect ratio?
It is the proportion between the width and height of an image or video, written as two numbers separated by a colon (for example 16:9). It describes the shape of the frame, independent of its pixel size.
How do I calculate the ratio of 1920×1080?
Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor. The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120, so 1920÷120 : 1080÷120 = 16:9. This calculator simplifies it automatically.
What's the difference between 16:9 and 4:3?
16:9 is the standard widescreen format for video and modern displays (wider). 4:3 is the classic, more square format, typical of Micro Four Thirds photography and older monitors.
Which ratio should I use for Instagram, YouTube or film?
YouTube and TV: 16:9. Reels, Stories and TikTok: 9:16 (vertical). Instagram square feed: 1:1 (or 4:5 portrait). Cinema: 2.39:1 (Cinemascope). The tool includes them all as presets.
Does changing the ratio crop or stretch my image?
It depends: cropping to the new ratio keeps the proportions but loses edges; force-stretching distorts the image. Work out the correct dimensions first so nothing gets deformed.
